<p>In <a href="Mathematics" title="Mathematics">mathematics</a>, a <b>linear approximation</b> is an approximation of a general <a href="Function_(mathematics)" title="Function (mathematics)">function</a> using a <a href="Linear_function" title="Linear function">linear function</a> (more precisely, an <a href="Affine_function" class="mw-redirect" title="Affine function">affine function</a>). They are widely used in the method of <a href="Finite_differences" class="mw-redirect" title="Finite differences">finite differences</a> to produce first order methods for solving or approximating solutions to equations.
